Workshops

The workshops will provide students with an interactive learning opportunity to broaden their understanding of how maths and science courses studied in school can lead to exciting discoveries and developments in real-life. Moreover, students will gain an appreciation of STEM career pathways through higher education.

We invite you to choose three workshops from the lists below. Workshops are 1 hour in duration and will be delivered concurrently by trained student ambassadors who are currently studying STEM at UQ.

Earthquake

Brought to you by Civil Geotechnical Consultants (CGC)

Discover how engineers design and construct buildings to withstand the various types of seismic waves generated by earthquakes. Students will design and test their own model buildings, by putting them through a one-minute simulated earthquake challenge.

This hands-on workshop will be delivered by engineers from CGC, Queensland specialists in geotechnical engineering services for transport and civil infrastructure.

Emergency Health Mission

We’ve all seen rescue helicopters and planes such as the Royal Flying Doctors Service in the sky, but have you thought about who modifies these amazing aircrafts for emergency health purposes? In this workshop, students learn from Queensland aerospace technology company, HeliMods who design innovative products and special mission solutions to perform a range of complex missions around the world. 

This collaborative workshop will challenge students to position critical equipment within a Helicopter and plane in a way that allows the flying vehicle to safely rescue, treat or transport their patients.

Binary coding workshopComputer languages are often referred to as Python, C#, Cobol and more, the computer’s original language is very basic and binary, 1’s and 0’s. In this workshop students will learn the basic of binary coding and how to create their own code. From there, they will design their own personalised wristband using the code.1 hour30
