Incident Reporting

You have an obligation to report all incidents via the UQ online incident reporting system.  Below is a guide to using the system, and a direct link to the online reporting page.

Risk Assessment

All tasks require to have an up to date, approved risk assessment completed prior to commencing the task.  Below is a guide to using the risk management system, and a link to the on line Risk Assessment database.  Please contact the EAIT WHS manager if you require assistance.  There is also a link to the staff development site with the training dates for 2011.  Alternativly you can contact the EAIT WHS manager for group training sessions.

Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances

Everyone in the workplace has obligations for the safe management of Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances that are being stored, transported or used within the University.  Below are some common Policies, Proceedures and forms required to ensure compliance with the Dangerous Goods Safety Management Act, and the Dangerous Goods Safety Management Regulations. 

Definitions

Dangerous Goods
Dangerous goods are classified on the basis of immediate physical or chemical effects, such as fire, explosion, corrosion and poisoning, affecting property, the environment or people.  Information on Classes, Legislation, Premises classification, Oblitgations and other usefull links can be found at the Dangerous Goods Information Page
 
Hazardous Substances
Hazardous substances are chemicals and other substances which can harm people’s health, causing injury, illness or disease. Health effects may be immediate and short term—such as irritation to the skin or eyes, or corrosive burns—or long term, such as tumours, cancers, or damage to organs.   Further information on helaht effects, exposure standards and legislation on Hazardous Substances can be found at the Hazardous Substance Information Page

Waste Procedures
Prior to disposing of any waste, please consult the Environmental Management System.  This system will guide you to the best method to dispose of chemicals.  Further information on waste.  Further information on recycling and waste procedures.
In order to dispose of chemical waste, it is important that you first read the MSDS sheet.  The University's chemical waste procedure  will assist you in selecting the best method to dispose of your waste.  Please fill in the Chemical Waste Request form to request waste collection by the University Chemical Store.  Please use your UQ username and log on to gain access to the system.  You will be required to fill in your profile if you have logged in for the first time.  Please not that there are chemical recieving and disposal areas in the Frank White Building and the Chemical Engineering building.  Please contact your building manager/WHSO for more information. 
 
Compressed Gas Safety
There are many types of compressed gases in use within the EAIT faculty.  Compressed gas bottle pose several risks that must be managed.  Prior to using compressed gases you should complete the compressed gas training module available on line here. Other information regarding compressed gas safety are available below.
