Call for Applications
Award to Work on Low Carbon London Project as ES Cornwall Scholar
Applications are being called for an ES Cornwall Award to enable up to two young Queensland power engineers to work for UK Power Networks on the Low Carbon London project.
This is a special ES Cornwall Memorial Scholarship award tenable for 6 to 12 months to enable the scholar to undertake paid professional employment with UK Power Networks in London on the project.
The award is open to engineering graduates from all Queensland universities with a preference for graduates with three to five years experience who would benefit from the placement and currently working in the power industry or as a university post-graduate.
Chair of the E.S. Cornwall Memorial Scholarship Advisory Committee and Powerlink Queensland Chief Operating Officer, Simon Bartlett, is a former scholarship recipient himself and said this is a great opportunity for a young engineer to work on an exciting and relevant project whilst broadening their experience in the global power industry.
With the focus on climate change, renewable energy, energy conservation and smart networks , working on one of the worlds flagship programs like Low Carbon London would provide a young engineer with invaluable experience so they can then return and apply this knowledge to Queensland’s power industry.
Leader of the power and energy systems research group at The University of Queensland, Professor Tapan Saha, said that the E.S. Cornwall Memorial Scholarship provided an outstanding opportunity for a young engineer to benefit from overseas experience in their chosen field.
The award recipient will receive a total grant of $10,000 to cover the cost of travel and relocation costs that will supplement the salary of approximately 20,000 pounds per annum to be paid by UK Power Networks whilst working on their project. Whilst not being a highly paid assignment, this is a great opportunity for personal development and professional experience.
In addition to technical ability, the selection committee is looking for a young professional engineer who demonstrates initiative and thorough planning as well as leadership ability.
Applications for the E.S. Cornwall Memorial Scholarship Award close on 24th February 2012 using the application form. For more information contact Gail Smith at the University of Queensland, on phone 07 3365 3853.

About ES Cornwall
Edward Satchwell Cornwall joined the City Electricity Light Company in 1913 and by 1937 had risen to be its Manager and Chief Engineer. In 1949 he became Managing Director of the company and he continued in this position after the restructuring of the company as the Southern Electricity Authority in 1953.
Throughout his career as a senior executive of the electricity supply industry, he remained a strong advocate of university training for professional engineers, and many young graduates owed him a deep debt of gratitude for his interest and guidance in their training and subsequent professional development.
Following his death in 1954, the E.S. Cornwall Memorial Scholarship was established by public subscription and with a contribution from the then Southern Electricity Authority.
