
Every year, as part of the University's Teaching and Learning Week, the faculties and UQ recognise outstanding contributions to teaching and learning with a series of awards.
These awards celebrate teaching excellence, programs that enhance student learning and outstanding contributions to student learning by individuals and teams.
The Faculty wishes to congratulate the 2009 award winners.
UQ Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning:
Professor John Simmons (School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering)
Professor John Simmons received a university citation that recognises an outstanding lifetime contribution to student learning through significant and sustained excellence in teaching that has inspired, challenged, and encouraged University of Queensland engineering students over four decades.
UQ Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning:
Mining Engineering and Mining Education Australia (School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering)
Dr Mehmet Kizil, Professor Paul Lever, Professor Andrew Scott and Dr Saiied Aminossadati accepted on behalf of the mining engineering team a UQ Award for Programs that Enhance Learning. Read the full citation here.

UQ Engineering and Engineers without Borders Design Challenge
Professor Caroline Crosthwaite accepted a UQ Award for Programs that Enhance Learning on behalf of the large team of UQ Engineering and EWB staff involved in delivering the EWB Design Challenge projects in the foundation first year engineering course Introduction to Professional Engineering. EAIT Faculty Teaching Awards:
Professor Arne Dahle (School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering)
Professor Arne Dahle is an enthusiastic lecturer who has consistently received student acclaim through high scoring teaching evaluations and numerous Deans Commendations over many years of successful teaching, including a large first year engineering course.
Mr Michael Dickson (School of Architecture)
Mr Michael Dickson is an excellent studio teacher who in addition to his significant contribution to the first year architecture student experience and studio teaching also coordinates student exhibitions and the computing component of the undergraduate architecture design program.
Mr Peter McMillan, Mr Graham Illidge and Mr Fraser Reid (School of Civil Engineering)
This award acknowledges the exemplary contribution of three key technical staff to hands-on student learning via laboratory based exploration and confirmation on engineering phenomena in undergraduate and postgraduate theses and practical courses.
Dr Kate O’Brien (School of Chemical Engineering)
Dr Kate O’Brien is a very skilful lecturer and course coordinator balancing interest with rigour and the wide range of student learning styles. She is passionate about teaching and learning as shown by her wide range of engagement with the students community and her efforts in linking students, staff and industry.
